Is There an Effective Solution for Unethical Use of Technology in the Workplace?

Advancements in technology have led to increased workplace productivity and economic development. However, with these technological advancements are some workplace performance problems that this country has never seen before.
Internet Personal web surfing or shopping, using company email for personal reasons  and playing computer games at work for a while might consider okay for some employee but most company consider it a clearly violation of public trust and is often times viewed as stealing time and money from an employer. Because this common workplace problem is costing employers billions in wasted salary dollars per year.
Solutions for the problem would be workforce education professionals such as implementing strong ethical use, and internet monitoring.
So, what is your suggestion to solve this problem?

  1. I think the only ethical decision would be relative to company culture. For example at a place like a bank I could certainly understand how use of the internet could be strictly prohibited. On the other hand if u worked at like home depot, I feel f you were ahead of your then on down time with lower-level managements approval it would be fine.

I imagine this debate will not cease. I do feel however that it will either become more and more prohibited or strict in the work place as more people become tech savvy.

  2. Curtis, I agree with you. Even thought we were searching for ways to prevent internet misuse in work place for our presentation, I was thinking that it is going to be hard day after day to control this issue, especially with emerge of smart phones and tablets. People now can carry them everywhere and use them during work hour which will reduce their productivity, and of course companies will not be able to monitor people’s phones or belongings.
