Personal internet use an incentive or detrimental to a company?

Are internet policies in the workplace a good or bad idea?

As business men/women wouldn't you like the freedom of being able to check your personal email if you're ahead of your work schedule? Wouldn't it be nice to check out that new vacation spot you're planning for your anniversary?

As an employee, I think most people would say they would like this freedom and trust from their employer. Some may even say this will encourage them to complete their work before deadlines are near. An internet policy that limited usage is acceptable if it does not interfere with work could be used as an incentive for employees to work harder. Most employees feel better about their jobs when they know their employer trusts them with topics like this and do not micro manage.

However, on the other hand, say you're the owner of a company, you would have to worry about your employees rushing through their work and not spending reasonable time to produce the quality of work that you both know they are capable of just so they can browse the internet for a few minutes.

In your opinion do you think companies should allow personal internet usage at work?

  1. In my opinion, I believe that companies should allow personal internet usage at work. Sometimes there are things that you need to check or verify, and if you are not allowed to, then those worries will be stuck in your mind all day long, and your productivity will go down. I agree with you that if you are ahead of schedule and you have some down time, then you should be able to do some personal research. I feel that it is an unspoken incentive to employees. As for the problem as to whether or not they will rush through their work and do a poor job, I feel that if their work is not up to par then the manager should limit/ban that specific employee's personal internet privileges. Everyone shouldn't suffer because a handful of people abused the privileges.

  2. I do not think there is any tolerance for doing personal business and web surfing on the clock. If you get your 8 hours in then clock out and do some personal surfing. But if I have a business with half of the employees doing personal business, my business isn't getting done and I am not paying you to do personal work.

  3. 5. I do not believe employees should be allowed personal use of the internet. When you go to work, you get paid to work, not play around on the internet. Plus if you are preoccupied with your personal email or next vacation while on the clock, there is no way you can be 100% focused on you job. This can be especially problematic if the task at hand is very sensitive. A little mistake can mean major losses for a company.

  4. From the comments posted, 2 say there is no tolerance for personal internet use and 1 said it should be aloud. In my personal opinion I feel some where in the middle. I do not believe it is completely unacceptable but I feel like there is a certain level to where if you cannot get your work accomplished and you spend the majority if your time online then there is a problem. If your job requires you to work 10-12 hour days, and you do nothing but work 100% of the time, your brain will get burned out. You should be aloud at least a few minutes to relax and destress by doing something non business related. If you believe you should be working every minute of every hour at work, what is the next step, no bathroom breaks or smoke breaks for employees? I believe there should be a medium that an employer can agree upon with their employees to make everyone happy and create the most productive workforce.
